20 Favorite European Cities

Here is a selection of 20 European cities that shouldn't be too difficult to visit.  I'm not trying to say they are the best, biggest, or most popular, but are probably cities that everyone from England can easily visit during their lifetime.

1

London, UK

2

Amsterdam, Holland

3

Athens, Greece

They tell us that Athens is the birth of civilisation, but with the heat and pollution of today's traffic, it's also likely to become the death of civilisation.

I've been to Athens three times, which is probably two times too many.  However, a picture of the Parthenon (the ancient Greek building) standing on the Acropolis (the rock outcrop) should be in everyone's photo-album.

After a day in Athens you're probably ready to leave.  A quick trip on the underground will take you to the port of Piraeus, where you can take the hydrofoil to Santorini, an island in the Cycloids.  This is of the most beautiful islands I've ever been to, with blue domed churches, black volcanic sands and clear blue water.  Thira, the capitol is built on the sheer edge of the volcanic crater, and has gorgeous views over to the smaller volcanic islands, one of which is still active.  The best place to stay is Kamari beach, a bustling area of tourist shops, hotels  and excellent water-front restaurants.

4

Bruges and Brussels, Belgium

5

Dublin, Ireland

6

Edinburgh, Scotland

7

Florence (via Pisa), Italy

8

Helsinki, Finland

9

Luxembourg

10

Madrid, Spain

11

Moscow, Russia

12

Munich, Germany

13

Oslo, Sweden

14

Paris, France

15

Prague, Czech Republic

16

Reykjavík, Iceland

17

Rome, Italy and the Vatican

Yes, yes ... I know that the Vatican is a different city to Rome, but you cant visit one without the other.

Rome is a fascinating place, with so much history.  I'm not even going to start to list the ancient ruins there, but just to say that you cant go anywhere within the city without seeing them.

The Vatican city should be visited by all good Christians, whether Catholic or not.  Its an absolute must for anyone's top 20 list.

18

Sofia, Bulgaria

19

Vienna, Austria

20

Venice, Italy
