The History of Quorum

As the name implies, Quorum is a group of like minded people.

The club was founded in 1982 by Joanna, a Scottish lady, who had recently been transferred by her company from Brussels to Woking.  Knowing no one in Surrey, she formed the club run on the same lines as "Fringe” a similar club for English speakers new to Brussels. Originally called "Fringe2”, later renamed to “Quorum?”.  The name was intended to provoke the question, how many people do you need to form a group?  The question mark was dropped later.

Several of our current members joined during Quorum’s first years, when membership was only £1.50, and have since played a very active and much appreciated role in helping to run the club.

The Badminton Club sprung up around about 1988 and has become a regular weekend event.  We used to play for two hours on Saturdays, but changed to Sundays in 1993, so people could get their shopping done!  There was also a regular Sunday squash and jazz club, but this faded away when the organiser moved on - here’s your chance maybe.

In April 1996, in order to make it easier for new members to find us, we started having "New Members Evenings" on the first Thursday of each month.  We started these at the Jovial Sailor at Ripley, but have since moved on to the Sovereigns in Woking.  Other Thursday Pub meetings are held in varied local pubs.

In January 2003 we celebrated our 21st Birthday by a trip to the Chinese!  A coach was hired to collect those who wanted to party and off we went to the Golden Palace Restaurant in Cranleigh for a lovely meal followed by disco dancing.  Most of the costs we met by the club's funds.

Recently (April 2004), this web site was launched.  It is hoped that this will help attract new members, as well as providing a useful resource for the current.

Since 2000, the membership has fluctuated between 60 and 80. We are always keen to encourage new members to join Quorum and play an active role, either by organising events or helping to run the club. If you know someone else who may like to join, then please bring them along to one of the Pub meetings. The more members we have, the more activities the club can offer.

At the March 2005 AGM it is was agreed to raise the age limit, which was 30 to 35, to 35 and over.  This better reflected the age range then (about 35 to 55) and it is hoped that this will also encourage new members to join.  The fee was also increased from £20 to £25 to help pay for insurance, increased advertising and event subsidies.

In 2008, with an ageing membership, the age range was changed again to 40 and over, reflecting the current membership age (which is about 40 to 55).  Also in 2008, the website was re-written, removing protected areas, frames and improving the layout and content and making better use of the Web-calendar and email.
